The Combustion Institute (German Section), the German Association for Combustion Research (DVV) and the VDI Society for Energy and Environment pay tribute to Bockhorn´s outstanding scientific contributions in the field of combustion with the Rudolf-Günther-Medal 2017.
The Rudolf-Günther-Prize is awarded by the Combustion Institute (Deutsche Sektion), the German Association for Combustion Research. (DVV) and the VDI - Gesellschaft Energie und Umwelt (VDI-GEU) for outstanding, long-standing achievements in the field of improving and promoting scientific research or the industrial use of safe, environmentally compatible and effective combustion processes. The prize is awarded during the two-yearly largest German conference in the field of combustion - the "Flammentag". At this year´s Darmstadt conference on 6/7 September, Professor Dr. Henning Bockhorn received this highest German award in the field of combustion. With this medal, the awarding scientific organizations of Bockhorn recognize Bockhorn´s outstanding, long-standing scientific achievements in the field of combustion technology:"His work has made a decisive contribution to a better understanding, mathematical description and simulation of combustion processes and the associated formation of gaseous and solid products through experimental investigations. His holistic thinking and acting as an important integrative contribution between theoretical basics and practical applications "is to be emphasized.
Henning Bockhorn headed the Institute of Chemical Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe from 1995 to 2009. From 1998 to 2013, he was also head of the Combustion Technology Division at the Engler-Bunte Institute and the Combustion Technology Division of the DVGW Research Centre at the Engler-Bunte Institute and the Fire Protection Technology Research Centre. Emeritus research focuses on the fundamentals of combustion processes and includes, for example, ignition processes, flame propagation, the characterisation of biomass combustion or the development of novel laser-based investigation methods for combustion processes. Bockhorn was awarded the DECHEMA Prize for "Quantitative Investigations on the Interaction of Turbulent Flow and Chemical Reactions" by the Max Buchner Research Foundation in 1991. In 2012, he was awarded the Gerhard Damköhler Medal of ProcessNet, the German platform for process engineering, chemical engineering and technical chemistry. In addition, in 2016 he received one of the highest international awards in the field of combustion, the Jürgen-Warnatz-Goldmedal of the Combustion Institute in Pittsburgh, USA
