SOPRANO

SOot Processes and Radiation in Aeronautical inNOvative combustors

The main scientific objective of SOPRANO is to achieve a breakthrough in research efforts in the field of soot particle chemistry, particle size distribution and their impact in terms of radiation at operating conditions typical of aircraft engines. SOPRANO aims at improving the knowledge and the capabilities of experimental and numerical investigations to characterize and predict soot emissions under "low NOx" combustion conditions.

The main industrial objective of SOPRANO is to perform the detailed characterisation of soot particles emitted by modern combustors under realistic operating conditions (e.g. at elevated pressure levels) and thus pave the way for a future design of high efficiency combustors. This requires a more precise determination of the radiation properties and thus of the combustion chamber wall temperatures.
